Banana Cardamom Upside-Down Cake

Ingredients

TOPPING
  • 4 tablespoons (1/4 cup) unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt or 1/2 teaspoon table salt
  • 2 firm bananas, peeled
CAKE
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed, at room temperature
  • 2 large eggs
  • about 2 medium bananas, peeled and mashed; enough to yield 1 cup banana
  • 3/4 cup full-fat sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 cups King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons ground cardamom
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
